Arvind Kejriwal on BBC IT Survey: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday that media is the fourth pillar of democracy and attack on its freedom is tantamount to suppressing the voice of the people. Kejriwal’s reaction came a day after the Income Tax Department launched a ‘survey operation’ on Tuesday at BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai and two other related locations as part of its probe into alleged tax evasion.
Kejriwal said in a tweet, “Media is the fourth pillar of democracy. Attacking the freedom of media is tantamount to suppressing the voice of the people. Whoever speaks against the BJP, these people leave IT (Income Tax Department), CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and ED (Enforcement Directorate) behind.” He questioned whether the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the country’s democratic leader. By crushing the system and institutions, it wants to enslave the whole country?
Opposition strongly condemned this survey
Fierce political debate also started between the BJP and the opposition parties regarding the survey of the IT department. While the opposition condemned the move, the BJP accused the BBC of doing ‘poisonous’ reporting against India. The Income Tax Department’s ‘survey operation’ against ‘BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) India’ continued for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as IT officials are believed to be copying electronic and paper-based financial data of the organisation. .
‘Clone…’ of computer and mobile phone
Officials aware of the development told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ that the officials of the Income Tax Department reached the BBC office at around 11.30 am on Tuesday and they are still present there. Tax officials are speaking to staff in the BBC’s finance and some other departments, while other staff and reporters were allowed to leave on Tuesday night. Officials said that ‘clones’ of some computers and mobile phones have been made. The surprise move came weeks after the BBC aired a two-part documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’.
